There is no profit involved, only making the money spent back (if anything at all, lol). I just want to have fun and get my stories out there. There is no deadline on the story, but I'd just like to see it through.

Several big television shows are written with a group of "staff" writers instead of just one. For instance, shows like LOST & HEROES, have a meeting with all of the staff writers. There is a "board" which describe last season, loose or dangling plot threads, and where they want the stories to go at the head of the room for reference.

The team of writers sits down and hashes out the details of where they want the show to go story wise and then the entire story is broken up into units, which will become episodes. Smaller groups (of one or two) write each episode and then run it by the leader (or "show runner") for approval before they go and get filmed.

Is there any reason why a comic, webcomic, or a couple different comics couldn't be written this way? I know that we won't be able to sit together in a real room but I see real possibility here. Those interested would have to commit to writing, and drawing, what ever the group decided to tackle as their first assignment even if it wasn't one particular individuals concept.

What do the rest of you think...

I'm looking for some advice. My and my bandmate are starting up a record label to self-produce our band's first album. We're seriously going to do this. We already have a single coming out in a few weeks on Crunks Not Dead, but we'd like to do our own full length cd. The other thing that we want to do is start publishing comics. We want to put out cds, merchandise for artists, comics, etc. I've noticed that a lot of you are or are planning to self-publish your comics. Can anyone give me some basic information or point me in the right direction where I can research how this is done? Also, I'm interested in any distribution and promotion tips.
And I'm still looking for anyone interested in collaborating. I have some fairy tale-like stories and some other ideas.

Or maybe todays readers are just more demanding and crave the complexities and the unexplored avenues.

Authors of metaphysical, conscious-shattering novels and comics Deepak Chopra and Grant Morrison met for the first time on July 19, 2006, and shared the stage of the largest conference room at Comic-Con International in San Diego. While Morrison is well known to readers of CBR, Deepak Chopra is the author of 40 non-fiction and fiction books about spirituality, health, philosophy, mysticism, and spirituality, as well as co-founder of Virgin Comics. He was unfamiliar with the word of comics until his son, Gotham Chopra, introduced him to the medium and the works of Grant Morrison specifically. Chopra has remarked that, "everything I've been trying to say in my nonfiction work and in some of my work had been so aptly, so beautifully and so imaginatively expressed in the work of Grant Morrison."

Titans in their fields, the pair spoke before a crowd equally divided between devotees and the merely curious with the fundamentals of modern philosophies concerning consciousness and causality, and, at least ostensibly, how they related to superheroes. The two spoke as if in casual conversation, and while their trains of thought diverted frequently from comics specifically, they managed to circle back to the advertised theme of the panel: the seven spiritual laws of superheroes.

Superheroes, in Chopra's view, are not external beings.

"These are archetypal beings that stoke the fire of life and passion in our own souls. These are potentials that exist within us, and by creating these superheroes through our own collective imagination, we are in a way serving our deepest longings, our deepest aspirations, and our deepest desires to escape the world of the mundane and the ordinary and do things that are magical."

This is not to say that Morrison and Chopra believe that human beings can actually attain the powers and perform the feats of, say, Superman. But what they do believe is that by assuming the premise that superheroes are mythical beings, our imaginations can live through and be inspired by their stories, and in turn return a positive influence back into the world. Strengthening this connection between imagination and its byproducts in our reality is the notion superheroes in particular are the product of collective consciousness. In other words, the superhero universe is one to which we all contribute.

"Superman has outlived his creator," Morrison said. "He's still there. They're dead. He'll still be there when I'm dead. ... Each new generation refreshes those stories in the same way the aboriginal artists send each new generation of artists to refresh the hand-paintings on the wall. We do the same thing, we refresh this eternal myth" of Superman.

"The comic displays our ability to achieve and do things which our beyond our muscular abilities," Chopra said. "If you look at Grant's work and his contribution to Superman or The Invisibles, you see that suddenly the superhero is becoming a mythical being. It encapsulates a whole mythology of the extraordinary capabilities that human spirit is capable of. With that kind of imagination and that kind of collective participation, we reach for new raw materials. The new materials mirror what's happening in our world of technology. Nanotechnology. Space technology. Clothing technology. The new raw materials of our imagination with which we can create an age that even Homer couldn't dream of."

Morrison and Chopra agree that comics are a medium with which to map the road to a better future. Comics as a technology are derived from cave paintings, which Morrison said were magical in intent.

"If you draw a bison on the wall with spears coming at it," Morrison explains, "Presumably you hope that conceiving of that [image] and making a model and affecting the model, you hope to affect reality. It's my insane utopian hope that we can do the same with comics. Comics can make a microscopic model of reality."

According to Grant Morrison, one of the great tools we have to do this is the superhero.

"In the 1930s the superhero figure was a social reformer. Superman used to jump through the window and throw the evil wife-beating husband out. In the '40s, Superman fought in World War II. In the '50s, during the time of McCarthyism, the superhero was a cop, a kind of big brother or big daddy figure. In the '60s, the superhero was reduced to mockery. In the '70s they tried to bring the superhero back. In the '80s, which was the interesting thing, the superhero was psycho-analyzed almost out of existence. If anyone remembers 10 years ago at this comic convention, we all thought comics were finished. The superhero was dead, it was all over. And now we're seeing 10 years on this resurgence. Look at the amount of people in this place. Look at the billboards. Superman, Spider-Man and the Teen Titans are on the sides of buses. All these images of human potential are in our conscious and are manifesting themselves in the mass media."

The seven spiritual laws of superheroes mirror the seven chakras of Hinduism. Chopra explained that chakras quite literally embody the different states of consciousness. A chakra is a junction point between the metaphysical and biology. The first of these, says Chopra, is stability.

"The highest potential of human stability," Chopra says, "Is when you can have infinite centered awareness and infinite dynamism at the same time. For me, a superhero who embodies that quality would be the perfect martial artist, because in a material artist you see infinite dynamism, finesse, timing, and also centered awareness."

The second chakra is that of transformation. Morrison and Chopra's brand of philosophy suggests the one constant attribute of spirit or soul is that it is constantly and forever in transformation whilst one's essence remains the same.

"The second quality of a superhero would be that absolute allegiance to transformation," Chopra declared. "The willingness to step into the unknown. The willingness not to have a permanent identity, because all identities are provisional and temporary and transient. There is no such thing as a permanent identity ... infinite flexibility is the secret of immortality."

The third chakra is power, but not in the typical sense of physical strength or muscle. Rather, the power of intention, that, in Chopra's words, "orchestrates its own fulfillment. The organizing power of consciousness."

The fourth chakra is one that Chopra and Morrison claimed to identify in the convention hall itself: love, compassion and understanding.

"There is nothing better than love and passion and connectivity and communication," Chopra said. "At the same time, [this chakra] is connected with power, with stability, with compassion and with transformation."

Morrison's comments about Superman reflect this chakra quite profoundly.

"The American myth was created in the 1930s by two teenage boys. Prior to that myth, American heroes were cowboys or gangsters who tamed their environment with violence and guns. Those two kids created a beautiful thing which has not quite come to fruition yet, but is starting to be recognized. They created the hero who will not kill. They made that."

The fifth chakra is said to be creativity. A superhero would certainly adhere to this rule, in that no matter what the conflict is, there is a creative solution.

The sixth chakra is intuition, and the seventh is transcendence. Chopra believes that the century's superheroes both old and new should use as their basis these spiritual rules so as to magically guide the course of human history.

"And you must clothe them with good stories," he added. "Stories that are simple. Stories that have a resonant plot. Stories that have compelling characters. Stories that have the contrast between dark and light; between sacred and profane and between divine and diabolical, but which will also embody very fundamental emotions."

Chopra is disheartened with many of today's comics due to what he feels is the lack of emphasis on human emotion.

"The extraordinary and the fantastical and the imaginative are so overwhelming that they overshadow very fundamental things that make you and me move in this world." Chopra feels that things like love, devotion, loyalty, betrayal, lust, courage and fear have been sidelined in favor of extravagant ideas for their own sake.

The audience asked a number of questions, and one stood out:

"I've spoken to reps from DC and Marvel and Dark Horse. They're the first to say, 'we have the comic character out there. It doesn't make money but it tent-poles to the 'identity' and we make films and video games.' They don't give a flying fuck about the archetypal essence of the character and why it's there to affect our lives personally. [Companies don't worry about why] we care about the characters so passionately. How can we make more of people like you who tell important stories? How can you fight the wave of narcissism, 'me too,' 'let's have money, screw these archetypes?' What's our battle plan?"

Chopra and Morrison responded almost simultaneously, expressing the solution through the metaphor of a great songwriter.

"He's not writing a song, thinking, 'I'm going to make royalties.' He's writing a song," said Chopra. "He's speaking from his soul. Pursue excellence and ignore success. Then you'll be totally unstoppable."

"We need to make the cave paintings for the 21st century," said Morrison.

I wanted to share this with anyone who is interested but also, feel free to ammend things that you think are needed. This isnt me being an ego maniac and telling people the ONLY way comics should be drawn. Not at all. This is for those folks who desire to learn how to draw comics but dont have the means to go to school, etc. A springboard if you will.

-For those seeking guidance in the drawing and illustration and creation of comic books but can't afford a full time school. A few simple suggestions that don't require tons of money but DOES require a lot of time.

1) DRAW DAILY. Scribble, sketch, doodle; just draw. Do it for ten minutes a day. AT LEAST. Make time for this. Let it grow into more. Comic book artists draw one to two pages a day. A DAY. They have deadlines of a month for (typically) 22 pages. Sometimes the deadlines are longer due to the needs of the inkers, colorists and letterers and editors who have to clean up your mistakes...BUT NOT ALWAYS!!! If a deadline is missed you dont get a poor grade or a slap on the wrist; you eventually get NO MORE WORK.

2) DRAW FROM LIFE. Whenever you can. Sign up for a life drawing course. Most cities have a once a week life drawing class that will cost you no more than 5 bucks for 3 hours of figure drawing. If you can take a community college course with an instructor; DO IT. It's so invaluable. It'll teach you WORLDS. If you can't take a course, drag your ass outside, sit on a bench with your sketch book, pencils and will-to-do and draw people passing by. Don't stress on the details. Get the action down first. Draw the details later.

3) CHECK OUT: "HOW TO DRAW COMICS THE MARVEL WAY". This is a great book that I highly recommend. It'll get your creative juices flowing. It has great art by master artist John Buscema who makes drawing comics look easy. The bastard!!! It has everything you need to know to jump into the field of comics; action poses, drawing real people, acting, perspective, backgrounds, panel layouts, and the tools every comic artist needs to draw a comic page. If you can't find it at Borders or your local bookstore, try the library. Make copies of it there. Take the copies home. Pin 'em to your wall and sleep with 'em under your pillow. ABSORB, ABSORB, ABSORB!!!

Also, if you can get your hands on some copies of Mike Manleys; "DRAW" magazine, you'll be a VERY happy camper. Industry greats litter the pages with knowledge of the field about how they do it and sometimes, how you can do it too. DC comics has put out a number of great books that tackle writing comics, drawing comics, inking comics and coloring and lettering comics. They run about 20 bucks each. Great reads all of them.

4) STUDY THE MASTERS. look at Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Gil Kane and many other great comic artists to see how they set up a shot. Break a comic page down to it's bare essentials. Take page 5 of your favorite comic and write out what happens in each panel. The action, the setting, the characters and what they are saying and HOW they are saying it. Think of comics as acting. Players on a 2-dimensional stage that YOU control. Take that written piece of paper, put the comic AWAY, and draw the page from what you have written (Reference the characters costumes if you need to but do it by looking at a different page they are on. Not the one you just wrote about-this is to excercise YOUR imagination. NOT to COPY what the other guy did). What shot would work best? What would move the story along? What is the best possible way for me to illustrate all this information to the reader in a clear and quick way? Ask yourself these questions while you are drawing. Give yourself a deadline while you are drawing the page also. Be reasonable. Give yourself a full day. You're doing this cuz it's fun, remember? But keep in mind that if you want to draw comics for a living, you're going to have to draw the comic within a given deadline. If you can't work within the deadline, your career is going to be very short indeed. Some artists also ink that same pencilled page in the same day. Think you're up to it? Go for it. Have fun!

FINALLY:
These are some thoughts from one of my teachers at the Joe Kubert School of Illustration and Design that have proven most useful to me.

"Making art is a life. It's NOT a job.""Make Art. Not just pictures.""Think about images and the making of Art all the time."

"DON'T follow a strict formula. Remain open to chance happenings that work. Trust your instincts and abilities but don't let that be an excuse for lousy Art."-(see; "Make Art, not just pictures.")

"Hammer on it but think about what you are doing. Aimless hammering is fruitless. It's your brain more than your hands that do it."

I guess you could call it my personal mission to assist everyone with talent and a drive to get seen out there, and to get their works noticed. I know, I know, I'm a nutball, but that's fine---so long as some of you make it, like I'm making it. I'm nothing special guys, but there are doors out there that can open to you if you look in the right place.

So, I would like to share a post, from my website with you, that just may be a door of opportunity for anyone in the right category, and with a set of 'gonads' (sorry ladies---but that includes you too!) to go after it.

Here's the post:

"Great thread!

I am not a comic book artist and outside of "girly" comics as a kid I never read comics or had any interest until I discovered Jaime's WANTED: HERO series. He opened my eyes to the possibilities of comics. Now I am on a new mission. (So blame it on him LOL)

My passion and work is with mental health professionals. In a nutshell, I think they are terrible at communicating their knowledge and services to health seekers. For crying out loud, most of them don’t even have a website or blog! Then they package their knowledge in a 300-page book filled with psychobabble that no one is going to read.

One of my many soapboxes is that the 30 and under clients, who will soon be the majority of their market, communicates in ways that most 40-65 year old therapists do not understand. Mainly, the Internet, websites, multimedia, IM, comics, graphic novels and online games. So we have a situation where most therapists cannot make a living and most health seekers cannot find the
help they need.

Jaime inspired me to think about the possibility of bridging this gap through online comics. I spent many hours exploring the digital comic sites. Frankly, I was very disappointed in most of what I saw. IMO, the world does not need another 100 comics about the daily life and angst of 20 something college students, copies of Manga and Anime comics, or more super-heroes. I looked at over 1,000 comics to find a few that I thought were ABOUT something for [Comics From The Heart www.psychjourney.com/comicsf...eart.htm on Psychjourney.

I believe there is a huge market for therapists who want to reach a new audience, get new clients and make passive income through online comics and graphic novels. I currently have in the planning an online graphic novel on sexuality issues and another on overcoming male sexual & physcal abuse as a child. I am concentrating on male issues on the first two comics since I believe that men are the biggest consumer of comics and that in the therapy field men’s issues have been overlooked.

I am looking for comic artists who are interested in discussing a collaboration to partner with me and a liscenced mental health professional to create comics or graphic novels about dealing with mental disorders, and other psychological issues. The comics will be sold online and include product placement for books and other services.

Contact me at deborah@psychjourney.com

Best,

SNAP! kicked ass! It was the best comic convention I ever did. I made over $35 selling my comics -- an unprecedented success! Also, the con further proved my "Population of 6 Billion" theory. That is, since there's apopulation of 6 billion, there exists a small yet substantial number of people who have the mentality to appreciate my comics! Moreover, the secret to my success at SNAP! doesn't really seem that secret. SNAP! had a focus on small press comics. While the comic cons I previously attended -- which were mostly unsuccessful for me -- had a focus on mainstream comics.

Yup! That's what I'm talkin' about! If you want to sell small press comics at a comic convention, then you need to go to a convention whose focus is on small press comics. Again I say, SNAP! kicked ass, and there's still a population of 6 billion!

The basic details behind my service are that virtually any theme is acceptable and the minimum cost per page is $10. I'd rather not go into further details on the guidelines for my custom comic service because, by definition, each custom comic is unique to each customer. Therefore, the further details will have to be worked out after you've decided to apply for my service. Doesn't that sound like it could work?

I will put new entries in on a regular basis, which will keep it growing---but I wanted to get your feedback and possible ideas for this feature. Take a look at it, read some entries, and let me know if it's interesting to you. Does it make you want to read the comic book? Does it make you curious at all? If you HAVE read the comic already (which many of you have), do you like this new feature?

Rather than posting most or all of the content on-line -- the newest issues are for subscribers only. However, you can get the issue with the MARVEL ULTIMATES on the cover and go on to page 74 of this month's issue and read one of their reviewers thoughts about HEROES IN BIRMINGHAM #1 AND #2.

Now, I know you're thinking... well I don't have issue #2 yet. No one but this reviewer got one. He got a laser copy. I'm hoping within the next week to have word from comixpress, our printer that issue #2 will be made available. I mean they only had the disk since May 27th!!!

Okay. Back to the info. The guy who reviewed it, didn't really care for it, but wasn't mean.

So I know that some of you guys read and liked HIB#1.

Was hoping you'd go to their new on-line discussion forum

Essentially if you go to the link you'll see...
A thread that says "POST NEW COMICS REVIEWS HERE"

Okay... don't post your review or comment in reply to that thread!
It is actually the information thread to the new comics review section!

Scroll down and look to see if there is already a thread started for

Heroes In Birmingham #1

If there isn't you'll need to start a thread and be the first poster!
(please, please?)

It is pretty easy to do on-line registration for the site, and it looks like you can choose to do a spoiler review or a non-spoiler review.

I don't need a full review to be happy -- just say one or two things that you liked about the comic, please?

Earlier this week, some guy hired me to do a custom foot fetish comic book for $50. ("Did you say 'foot fetish comic'?! Have you flipped your orbit?!?" "Why yes I have. Thanks for noticing.") to that, I say doing custom comics is way better than doing comics for a mass audience. After all, it's painfully difficult to figure out how to do a comic that would appeal to the widest audience. And it's even more painfully difficult to find people (out of a population of 6 billion) who already have t mentality to appreciate the type of comics you've produced. But with custom comics, all you have to do is ask the individual what they want in a comic, and they are extremely likely to buy it. Therefore, I'm going to make custom comics my main focus.

But then again, the idea of custom comics isn't new to me. I got the idea maybe three or four years ago from someone who saw my art in some miscellaneous zine and subsequently hired me to do a custom comic for him. He only paid for three pages, then dropped off the face of the planet. That blows! But maybe this time, it'll work for me. If so, I could, in theory, make a profit off of it. And since I have made mention of my custom art service on numerous message boards and such, it could finally mean that I have FOUND A WAY TO PROFIT FROM THE INTERENET USING MY ART! Now that's what I'm talkin' about!

hey all,
its sunday i got home a few hours ago (went thurs-sat and drove home today... sunday).
I was amazed at the turnout!! I have never been and found it amazing. My bf and I were a bit unorganized and as a result missed a few things we wanted to see. I got lotz of free giveaways and even a free comic from a writer...

Anyway I'm REALLY excited to see some of the stuff come out that was promoted...

Has anyone been reading elk's run? Well the same publisher (hoarse and buggy) are releasing another book called the 8th. Sounds very interesting...

anyway what were everyone else's thoughts on it? how did it compare to previous years, favorite panels/booths? etc etc...

my favorite panel was the LIVE teen titan reading. I LOVE the teen titan animated series and watching them read live was EXCITING i am only saddened that I could not get pictures w/ the cast....

It was wierd seeing the 'human' faces behind the characters and chilling too! Everytime Trigon said ANYTHING it sent chills down my spine.
They only did the first few scenes from the episode that was played on sat... and and played that part of actual episode after the live read... Since i was at the comic con all day i missed the last half of the show... and am really sad about that.... (only down side of the comicon)

We drove in early the first day (thurs) and got parking right across the street from the convention center (we got there at 830 I think) but after that we started taking the trolley...

I missed the masqurade party coz I didn't know you had to get advanced tickets... and I didn't wanna hang around to just get rejected so we left earlier than i would have like on sat....

anyway blah blah... what are your thoughts?
Hi!

I'm looking for an artist who is willing to take a commission to design and draw ten characters, plus a group shot containing all ten characters. The ten illustrations would be in color (the medium is irrelevant) and 8.5x11 to 11x17; the group shot should be larger, and will also be in color.

The characters are Golden Age superheroes from my weekly RPG group, and the art will only be displayed in our homes or at our group website. The artist retains the right to display the art as part of his portfolio, but we don't want our characters being re-sold for prints, etc.

We have basic looks for the characters, but we're looking forward to seeing what an artist can do with our basic ideas. In other words, the character appearance is quite open to the artist's interpretation.

I'm looking for someone whose art style is similar to this fellow's:

http://www.golden.net/~enorthcott

He was my first choice, but he's busy.

If you're interested, please contact me offline at "ben AT prodigal DOT ca" with your rates, expected time of completion, and someplace where I can look at your work.

Okay, this is something that I've discussed only with Ed so far.

Here is the scenario - you don't need a vendor's license to sell books and art in NYC.

Saturday July 23rd is the weekend after San Diego Con.
Maybe you aren't going, maybe you've rested up a bit.
We don't meet until after 3:30 PM.

Concept: bring a towel or a blanket -- comics to sell or trade, your art boards, your sketch books, some cash, some food or drink.

We hang out, starting at 3:30 -- and food gets opened starting at 4pm.
This way people who can't cook or don't want to share may have already have had lunch.

Also eveyone can sleep in late.

We hang out and do our thing until dark -- or later if the park allows (dark is around 9 PM).

Location - set up to allow for pedestrial walk-by traffic - but in the shade
Union Square Park.

Keep in mind - this is New York.

1 - no open alchol is allowed in public places.

2- many hungry and homeless people - once we open the food it has to be given to anyone who asks for it, until we run out.

However, we don't have to let casual passer bys know about the food.
However, once it is opened, word will spread.
This means... if you want in on the "pot luck" aspects be on time!

Bathrooms in Barnes and Nobel as well as Tower Video.

Let me know if you think you can go -- and if you know of any people outside of tribe that you might want to invite to come by.

Now this is 3 blocks away from Forbidden planet and 4-5 blocks away from a 14th street and 6th ave comic book shop. Do we want to get them involved?

Feedback please for the next few weeks (originally posted on June 7th 2005).

Since them my tastes have changed and I am not interested in the comics I once was. Going from Image, who did put out some quality orginal work to most diy zine style comics. Now in the midst of producing my own zine, I really need some money. I know alot of background story. I am just hoping to enlist the help of a wise comic collector who doesn't mind sharing some pointers so that I can sell off some of my least priced comic and support my modest living expense at the same time. I know people out there don't want to share there tricks with someone who might make there business harder, this is why I am reassuring you that I am not planning on making a career out of this I just want to get atleast face value or so for my comics which I have kept in mint condition. Maybe I just need to wait another ten years before I try and sell them? Is six years a bad age to sell? Thanks for any help! _Smitty

Comic Book writer seeks illustrator to work on new graphic novel project. This is an excellent opportunity for any individual trying to break into the business or simply wanting to beef up their portfolio. This project will be pitched to Image, Dark Horse, Black Bull and Oni publishing companies. The story, characters, and world have been thoroughly researched and developed. The next step is your input and line art/inks to create the visual elements of the piece.

Initial work will be character splash sheets and 9 pages of sequential art to meet all proposal standards. Artist must understand anatomy, sequential art, camera angles, hit dead lines and be willing to add their own flair and interpretation.

At this point, payment will be deferred, but this is why we begin at the proposal level. If you think you can handle 3-5 splash pages and 9 sequential sheets in order to launch a new comic, then we can move forward with this exciting project. At the very least, your work will be seen by editors for the companies above.

Please send pdf or jpg examples of your sequential work and splash pages.

I have page & panel scripts, ugly storyboards :) and extensive character/setting notes. Plots discuss highly mature themes, and artist needs to be very comfortable with what some might call 'risque' topics.

I would like finished look to be watercolor-like on inked pages, Artist or myself may supply coloring.

Here's a thought about drinks - five of us with art in tow barely squeezed into a table at Grassroots Tavern last time. A friend of mine is planning to make it this Wed, and I hope to see other new faces. This will most likely result in two not necessarily adjacent tables, yes? Depending on how this next meeting goes, maybe we should think of a place with a big corner booth or something.

BTW, I no longer see the event notice regarding this coming Wed at Grassroots. Are we on for Feb 30? You're getting the first round, right Ed?
